SUMMARY:Volunteer Planting - Salmon Creek
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer with NOSC on November 16th to plant native trees and shrubs to expand the riparian buffer at Salmon Creek!\nNovember 16th\, 10am-2pm at Salmon Creek Wildlife Area \nThis winter we aim to extend the riparian buffer on the west side of Salmon Creek. Outside the 50 – 150-foot current buffer\, the floodplain is currently dominated by invasive Reed Canary Grass which provides little ecosystem services. Riparian buffers play crucial roles in controlling erosion\, providing shade\, filtering pollutants\, slowing runoff\, and are future sources of large woody debris. \nAbout the site: \nThe Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (WDFW) Salmon Creek Wildlife Area is part of the broader 196-acre Discovery Bay Wildlife Area Unit which was acquired for stream\, riparian\, and estuarine restoration and protection. Salmon Creek is one of two major salmon streams that flow into Discovery Bay\, providing crucial habitat for ESA-listed Hood Canal Summer Chum and steelhead. Extensive salmon monitoring via WDFW spawner and smolt traps over the past 20 years shows rebounding chum populations after a stream re-meandering\, riparian buffer planting\, and numerous estuary and nearshore projects. Learn more about NOSC’s estuary and nearshore restoration HERE. \nPlease bring: \n\nLunch\nWater\nLayers for our late fall weather\nSturdy shoes\n\nWe will have work glove and all needed tools/equipment. We will also have some heavy-duty rain gear available to borrow. \nGetting There: Google Maps \n\nFrom Clallam County – take 101 east to Discovery Bay. Just past the old Disco Bay Outdoor Gear Exchange\, turn right on W Uncas Road.  Travel about 1/4 mile\, and look for the NOSC sign at a pullout on your left.\nFrom Port Townsend/Hwy 20 – take Hwy 20 south to 101. Turn right on Hwy 101 then take a left on W Uncas Road just before the old Dico Bay Outdoor Gear Exchange. Travel about 1/4 mile\, and look for the NOSC sign at a pullout on your left.\nFrom 104/101 interchange – take 101 west towards Port Angeles\, continue into Discovery Bay and take a left on W Uncas Road (the north end) just before the old Dico Bay Outdoor Gear Exchange. Travel about 1/4 mile\, and look for the NOSC sign at a pullout on your left.\n\nPhoto by Jeremy Johnson.

We highly encourage carpooling! \nPlease bring the following: \n\nGloves\nWater Bottle\nSnacks\nLayers for fall weather\n\nSaturday\, October 19th\, 10am – 12:30pm. \n321 West Uncas Road Port Townsend\, WA 98368

SUMMARY:Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for the Salmon Coalition Annual Meeting October 15th! \nWe’re excited to share with you the work we’ve done over the past year\, both in education and restoration projects. We have a great keynote speaker lined up to share about the connection our work has to another unique part of our Pacific Northwest ecosystem – the Pacific Lamprey! \nWe invite you to bring a pie to share with the community to celebrate in true Salmon Coalition fashion! Savory pies are especially appreciated. \nWhen:  \nTuesday\, October 15th \nDoors open at 5pm. The meeting will begin at 5:30pm. \nWhere: \nDungeness River Nature Center \n1943 W Hendrickson Rd\, Sequim\, WA 98382 \n \nA lamprey captured as part of the fish relocation process ahead of the stream restoration project at the Snow Creek Uncas Preserve in the summer of 2023. These unique fish\, inhabit some of the same habitat as salmon and benefit from restoration work. Photo by NOSC. \nAnnouncing our Keynote Speaker: \nMonica Blanchard\, Fish/Lamprey Biologist \nMonica Blanchard works for Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and US Fish and Wildlife\, focusing on conservation and monitoring of native lampreys for both agencies. In this position\, she works on raising awareness about lampreys and collaborates with biologist and managers to incorporate lamprey into projects around the state. Additionally\, she leads and participates in research projects in WA and OR to advance our understanding of lamprey and their habitat use. Prior to this position she worked on salmon and steelhead restoration projects and ESA monitoring in Alaska\, Washington\, and Oregon. One of her favorite things about these fish\, both west coast lampreys and salmonids\, is the great variety of ecosystems they inhabit. \nMonica will speak about the life histories and ecological importance of lamprey as well as the connection between salmon restoration work and these unique fish!

SUMMARY:Member Tour: Nearshore Restoration in Discovery Bay
DESCRIPTION:Join NOSC for a Member Tour of nearshore restoration work in Discovery Bay!\nMember tours give Salmon Coalition Members the opportunity to see the impact of the work they support with tours of complete\, in-progress\, or upcoming projects with staff members. Find out more\, join\, or re-join today by visiting Become a Member | North Olympic Salmon Coalition (nosc.org). \nAbout the Tour:\nVisit the Maynard Nearshore Restoration site\, 10-years after restoration work removed 150 creosote pilings from an abandoned railway and restored 1\,700 feet to natural shoreline. Learn about the importance of nearshore restoration\, how salmon utilize this key habitat\, and get a sneak peek at our upcoming restoration work in Discovery Bay! \nSaturday\, September 21st \n \nLocation: Discovery Bay (Directions and parking information provided with registration) \nTour starts at 10:30am. Bring your own picnic and stay for lunch afterwards! We’ll have treats to share. \nBring what you need to be comfortable outside. Most of the site is in full sun. Bring a picnic and a stay for lunch on the beach! \nAbout the Project:\nThe Maynard Nearshore Restoration Project removed a 1\,700 ft. portion of the abandoned Chicago-Milwaukee railroad grade in Discovery Bay (last used in 1984)\, including creosoted pilings\, 1\,200 lineal ft. of bulkhead and a defunct tide gate. Revegetation was completed by volunteers and the Washington Conservation Corps Crew. The result is habitat for hard shell clams and forage fish\, an important food fish for salmon\, among many other species. The bulkhead removal restored a shallow water migration corridor for juvenile summer chum as they migrate out to sea\, a much safer passage than what the concrete and bulkheads provided. \nCan I still come if I’m not a Salmon Coalition Member?\nYes! We always welcome volunteers to share in member tours as thanks for contributing your time and energy to the Salmon Coalition. If you are new to NOSC and want to learn more about our projects before you volunteer or donate\, please reach out to lmccord@nosc.org. Priority is given to members and volunteers\, but if there is still space available\, we welcome anyone to join!
