SUMMARY:Member Tour: Trapping and Monitoring at Salmon Creek
DESCRIPTION:Join NOSC for a Member Tour!\nMember tours give Salmon Coalition Members the opportunity to see the impact of the work they support with tours of complete\, in-progress\, or upcoming projects with staff members. Find out more\, join\, or re-join today by visiting Become a Member | North Olympic Salmon Coalition (nosc.org). \nJoin the North Olympic Salmon Coalition for an exclusive Member Tour with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). Stock Assessment Biologist Casey Sloth will lead us at Salmon Creek\, where WDFW staff and volunteers operate a fish trap to monitor salmon runs. Members will see first-hand how fish are captured\, identified\, and sampled for important data that may reveal the age and life history of each salmon. The tour will also provide a chance to observe Summer Chum and Coho salmon up close during their migration. \nWhat to expect: This is a field-based tour with uneven ground and wet conditions near the creek. WDFW staff will have fish on hand for demonstration\, and participants may see live salmon in the trap as well as spawned-out carcasses used for scientific sampling. Please dress for variable weather\, wear sturdy footwear suitable for mud and cobbles\, and be prepared for light walking off maintained trails. \nAbout the project: Summer Chum once nearly disappeared from Hood Canal and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act\, these salmon rely on healthy stream and estuary habitats to survive. Through decades of work by NOSC\, WDFW\, local tribes\, and volunteers\, Summer Chum runs in creeks like Chimacum\, Jimmycomelately\, and Salmon Creek have shown strong signs of recovery. Monitoring programs like the Salmon Creek trap are critical for tracking population health\, guiding restoration\, and ensuring this remarkable species continues its comeback. Your support as a NOSC member helps make this recovery possible. \nThe meeting point and driving directions are provided in registration confirmation. \n  \n**Space is limited – RSVP is required** \nSalmon Coalition Members receive priority registration through September 30th. Registration for Non-Members opens October 1st. \n  \nFill out my LGL Form!\n \n  \nCan I still come if I’m not a Salmon Coalition Member?\nYes! We always welcome volunteers to share in member tours as thanks for contributing your time and energy to the Salmon Coalition. After priority registration\, we welcome anyone to join if there is still space available! \nSharing our mission and involving the community in salmon restoration work is a vital part of what we do. Please consider supporting us by becoming a Salmon Coalition Member: Become a Member | North Olympic Salmon Coalition (nosc.org) or making a one-time or monthly donation Donate | North Olympic Salmon Coalition.

SUMMARY:Member Tour: Morse Creek
DESCRIPTION:Join NOSC for a Member Tour!\nMember tours give Salmon Coalition Members the opportunity to see the impact of the work they support with tours of complete\, in-progress\, or upcoming projects with staff members. Find out more\, join\, or re-join today by visiting Become a Member | North Olympic Salmon Coalition (nosc.org). \nIn 2010\, the Salmon Coalition completed a large-scale stream restoration project at Morse Creek. The project included re-meandering the stream\, constructing side channels\, installing engineered logjams\, and planting a diverse riparian forest. Now\, 15 years after the project was completed\, return to the site with Project Manager Kevin Long to revisit to restoration work\, see how the creek and forest have reacted to restoration over time\, and hopefully see some spawning pink salmon! \nWhat to expect: the tour site has a lot of uneven ground\, cobbles\, and vegetation. This site is not suitable for those with mobility concerns. While we will not be traveling very far\, there is no maintained trail. Participants should plan to walk over uneven terrain\, step over fallen logs\, and be comfortable walking off-trail in a forest. \nAbout the project: The Morse Creek Riverine Restoration Project re-activated 1700 feet of main channel\, 700 feet of side channel and 9.3 acres of floodplain as it existed around 1930\, prior to the installation of a dike which pushed the river against the valley wall. Restoration includes realigning the channel\, the construction of 19 engineered log jams and the addition of side channels that will provide wintering habitat for salmonids. Improvements will benefit ESA-listed steelhead\, bull trout\, pink salmon\, coho salmon\, and chum salmon. \nDriving directions are provided in registration confirmation. \n**Space is limited – RSVP is required** \nSalmon Coalition Members receive priority registration through August 3rd. Registration for Non-Members opens August 4th. \n \nCan I still come if I’m not a Salmon Coalition Member?\nYes! SUMMARY:Member Tour: Nearshore Restoration in Discovery Bay
DESCRIPTION:Join NOSC for a Member Tour of nearshore restoration work in Discovery Bay!\nMember tours give Salmon Coalition Members the opportunity to see the impact of the work they support with tours of complete\, in-progress\, or upcoming projects with staff members. Find out more\, join\, or re-join today by visiting Become a Member | North Olympic Salmon Coalition (nosc.org). \nAbout the Tour:\nVisit the Maynard Nearshore Restoration site\, 10-years after restoration work removed 150 creosote pilings from an abandoned railway and restored 1\,700 feet to natural shoreline. Learn about the importance of nearshore restoration\, how salmon utilize this key habitat\, and get a sneak peek at our upcoming restoration work in Discovery Bay! \nSaturday\, September 21st \n \nLocation: Discovery Bay (Directions and parking information provided with registration) \nTour starts at 10:30am. Bring your own picnic and stay for lunch afterwards! We’ll have treats to share. \nBring what you need to be comfortable outside. Most of the site is in full sun. Bring a picnic and a stay for lunch on the beach! \nAbout the Project:\nThe Maynard Nearshore Restoration Project removed a 1\,700 ft. portion of the abandoned Chicago-Milwaukee railroad grade in Discovery Bay (last used in 1984)\, including creosoted pilings\, 1\,200 lineal ft. of bulkhead and a defunct tide gate. Revegetation was completed by volunteers and the Washington Conservation Corps Crew. The result is habitat for hard shell clams and forage fish\, an important food fish for salmon\, among many other species. The bulkhead removal restored a shallow water migration corridor for juvenile summer chum as they migrate out to sea\, a much safer passage than what the concrete and bulkheads provided. \nCan I still come if I’m not a Salmon Coalition Member?\nYes! We always welcome volunteers to share in member tours as thanks for contributing your time and energy to the Salmon Coalition. If you are new to NOSC and want to learn more about our projects before you volunteer or donate\, please reach out to lmccord@nosc.org. Priority is given to members and volunteers\, but if there is still space available\, we welcome anyone to join!

SUMMARY:Member Tour: Birdwatching at 3 Crabs
DESCRIPTION:Photo by John Gussman. \nJoin the Salmon Coalition’s Project Manager\, Kevin Long and Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society’s Bob Boekelheide for a restoration site tour and birdwatching in this restored estuarine habitat!\nMember tours give Salmon Coalition Members the opportunity to see the impact of the work they support with tours of complete\, in-progress\, or upcoming projects with staff members. Find out more\, join\, or re-join today by visiting Become a Member | North Olympic Salmon Coalition (nosc.org). \nAbout the Member Tour:\n \nLearn about the importance of estuarine restoration\, the complexities of restoring a delicate habitat\, and how the project has benefitted an entire ecosystem. Bob Boekelheide will lead a birdwatching tour of the site. This time of year\, we can expect to see migrating shorebirds and gulls as well as Purple Martins utilizing nest boxes. \nMonday\, July 29th at 3 Crabs. Directions in registration. \n9am – Birdwatching with Bob Boekelheide\, OPAS \n10:30am – Restoration Tour with Kevin Long\, NOSC \nPlease bring binoculars and/or a spotting scope if you have them. The trail from the parking lot is flat and short\, however there may be logs to step over. \n*Registration is REQUIRED. There is a 15-participant cap.* \nAbout the Project:\nCompleted in 2016\, the 3 Crabs Nearshore and Estuarine Restoration Project restored 84 acres of estuarine and off-channel habitat at Meadowbrook Creek\, which is part of the greater Dungeness River estuary. These quiet channels and pools now provide essential transitional habitat where juvenile salmon from the Dungeness and other rivers will forage and grow on their journey to the ocean. Learn about the importance of estuarine restoration\, the work that was completed almost a decade ago\, and how the project has benefitted an entire ecosystem. \nSince 1998 the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society (OPAS) has dedicated work and resources to a project that provides safe and species-specific nesting cavities for Purple Martins to help them nest and reproduce successfully and remain a part of our state’s vibrant array of birds. OPAS was an essential partner in the 3 Crabs Estuarine Restoration Project in helping to ensure the continued presence of Purple Martin nesting at the site. \n \nPurple Martins – 3 Crabs Estuary by Dow Lambert.

SUMMARY:Member Tour: Snow & Salmon Creeks
DESCRIPTION:To thank our members for their generous support of NOSC\, we invite current members to attend Member Tours. We are excited to announce the first tour of this membership year!\nSnow & Salmon Creeks\nAugust 31st – 4:30pm\n \nSalmon Creek: 2003 & 2020 by NOSC Staff. \nWe plant a tree and then what? This member tour will explore the multi-stage restoration of riparian forests along Snow and Salmon creeks in Discovery Bay. With restoration and protection efforts stretching back over two decades\, this site is home to numerous past and ongoing collaborative projects. We’ll meander through a riparian buffer planted nearly 20 years ago and along habitat restoration work completed this past spring by Jefferson County middle school students. Join us for a walking tour with our Program and Partnership Manager and 15 year veteran of NOSC riparian restoration projects\, Sarah Doyle\, as she answers the questions: What did we do? Did it work? What still needs to happen? How do we manage riparian restoration in the long term? Learn about how this project fits into the overall effort of habitat restoration and land protection in the valley and its implications in the recovery of Hood Canal Summer Chum. \nSpots are limited\, so register soon! Stay tuned for additional tour dates and locations throughout the year. \nStill need to renew your membership or join as a new member? Visit Become a Member | North Olympic Salmon Coalition (nosc.org) to join today! \n \nTop photo courtesy of Charles Espey.
