They will also participate in several other activities such as macroinvertebrate studies\, salmon life cycle games\, art\, and habitat tours. Volunteers help NOSC staff lead activities\, set-up and take-down supplies\, and ensure students rotate through activity stations safely. \nApril 17th\, 24th\, 29th\, 30th & May 7th – Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe House of Salmon Hatchery on the Elwha River. SUMMARY:Volunteer Opportunity: Youth Restoration Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:It is that season again and we are gearing up to get our middle school students out in the field again to assess the success of their restoration planting projects they spent all this winter designing and implementing. We have one last you field trip this spring and are in need of volunteers to help guide students as part of the Real Learning Real Work program. \nWhat to expect as an education volunteer: \nThere are several roles for you to help with! Please communicate with me if you are not comfortable in one of the roles. \n\nSetting-up & cleaning up: this involves transporting equipment to different areas of the site such as tape measure\, bins of work gloves\, tables\, and rain gear.\nFloating Guide: float between groups of 4-6 students and help guide them to carry out their assigned tasks\, answer questions\, and help with task such as planting\, using tools\, identifying invasives\, etc.\nEquipment/Gear/Plants: check out tools and equipment to students\, help them find work gloves that fit\, ensure they return tools/gloves in a clean(ish) and organized fashion.\n\nI will send out an updated schedule and any additional information you might need the week before the field trip. We will meet 30-45 minutes before the students arrive to answer questions\, go over the schedule\, and make sure you feel prepared. \nDates & Locations: \nSequim is our largest school we work with and they split their trip into 2 days\, ½ the 7th grade class on each day. This is our greatest need for volunteers – the more volunteers we have\, the smaller we can keep student groups. SUMMARY:Macroinvertebrate Monitoring Class
DESCRIPTION:Join NOSC to monitor macroinvertebrates at Chimacum Creek!\nMacroinvertebrate. It’s a term that is familiar to some\, but unfamiliar to many. Macroinvertebrates are small organisms that lack a backbone\, are visible to the naked eye\, and are large enough to be easily collected. Aquatic macroinvertebrates include insects\, crustaceans\, bivalves\, gastropods\, and annelids. The particular assemblage of aquatic macroinvertebrates in a given waterway can be an excellent indicator of ecosystem health. This is because different species have varying levels of tolerance to pollution and disturbance. Some\, like stoneflies and mayflies are highly sensitive to changes in water quality\, while organisms like crayfish\, leeches\, black flies and midges are much less sensitive. Macroinvertebrate sampling is a fun and relatively simple way to assess stream health and NOSC has been facilitating sampling activities in local streams and rivers for several years. Come join us on Thursday\, May 21st from 10 am – 1 pm at HJ Carroll Park in Chimacum as we analyze the creek’s health through macroinvertebrate sampling. This is an activity that is appropriate for all ages\, so feel free to bring the family along! \nEvent Details:\nThursday\, May 21st \n10 am – 1 pm \nPlease arrive by 10 am for site orientation and training. Bring snacks\, water\, layers appropriate for our spring weather. If you’d like to participate in the collection of macroinvertebrates from the creek\, please bring waterproof boots.
