SUMMARY:Coho Spawner Survey Training
DESCRIPTION:Coho season is nearly upon us on Chimacum Creek and nearby watersheds. As such\, the Salmon Coalition will be hosting its annual coho survey training at the WSU Classroom in Port Hadlock on Wednesday\, November 12th from 10am to 12 pm. \nWe’re looking for enthusiastic\, able-bodied volunteers to walk the creek and its tributaries in search of coho and the nests\, or redds\, they create in which to lay their eggs. Volunteers can expect to encounter uneven terrain and occasional obstacles such as fallen trees to maneuver around as well as occasional inclement weather. Training is mandatory\, as volunteers need a good understanding of how to mark redds and document sightings of spawning fish. Space is limited to 24 participants. Click below to register! \nWhat to expect as a spawner survey volunteer: All needed equipment is provided. Conducting a spawner survey requires volunteers to walk over uneven and slippery terrain\, through water and brushy slopes\, and over and around logs. You will work in teams each week from mid-November through early-January on a reach of Chimacum Creek to collect important data on the coho run. \nQuestions? Reach out to Nate Roberts at nroberts@nosc.org \nPhoto by Kevin Merrigan.

SUMMARY:Barerooting Plants
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer to help NOSC bareroot plants to prepare them for planting at Serenity Lane the next day. \nWe will be working at the NOSC Nursery at Finnriver Farm & Cidery to remove native trees and shrubs from their storage pots. Now dormant for the winter\, these plants can be transported for planting by removing the potting soil from their roots. This allows us to prepare and transport large quantities of plants more efficiently. \nWe will meet at 1pm at the NOSC Garage and walk out to the nursery. Please RSVP for driving directions. \n \n

SUMMARY:Volunteer Planting – Serenity Lane
DESCRIPTION:Join NOSC on December 3rd to plant trees and shrubs along the Dungeness River!\nAn aerial image of the Dungeness River\, taken in 2020. Photo by John Gussman. \nAs part of an ongoing riparian forest restoration project\, we will be returning to the Dungeness River to plant trees and shrubs at the Serenity Lane Riparian Restoration Project. In previous years\, this site underwent a massive invasive species removal effort. We aim to fill in the remaining portion of the project with native plants. This diverse future forest will grow to shade the salmon stream\, control erosion\, and provide habitat for the birds\, insects\, amphibians\, and mammals that also call the Dungeness ecosystem home. \nPlanting Details:\nWednesday\, December 3rd \n10am – 2pm \nPlease arrive by 10am for site orientation. We’ll take a break for lunch around noon. A site tour will take place at about 1:30pm. \nPlease bring lunch\, water\, and layers/footwear you need to be comfortable in our winter weather! \nDirections will be provided in RSVP confirmation email. \nRiverbank lupine growing along the Dungeness River. Photo by John Gussman. \nAbout the Project:\nIn 2015\, the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe purchased and removed several homes at danger of washing into the Dungeness River. The Salmon Coalition joined the Dungeness River Riparian Project in a massive community effort to remove invasive species and replace them with native plants\, including seeding the area with riverbank lupine. In recent years\, Serenity Lane has been the site of several NOSC student plantings. It is time to return to the site to fill in remaining areas with native trees and shrubs\, ensuring invasive vegetation remains at bay. \n \n\nTop: A group of volunteers plant native trees and shrubs near the Dungeness River. SUMMARY:Volunteer Planting – Dungeness River Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:Join NOSC on February 18th to plant trees and shrubs along the Dungeness River at the Dungeness River Nature Center!\nAn aerial image of the Dungeness River\, taken in 2020. Photo by John Gussman. \nJust downstream from the Dungeness River Nature Center\, this site is located in dense riparian forest. Growth in the understory has been limited by deep shade\, and the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe has recently taken measures to thin this section of forest and allow for a more robust assortment of native understory plants. Building on the Nature Center’s plantings earlier this year\, we will be planting the riparian understory with shade-tolerant plants to boost the area’s biodiversity and provide new and improved habitat for native birds\, insects\, amphibians\, mammals\, and more! \nPlanting Details:\nWednesday\, February 18th \n10am – 2pm \nPlease arrive by 10am for site orientation. We’ll take a break for lunch around noon. A site tour will take place at about 1:30pm. \nPlease bring lunch\, water\, and layers/footwear you need to be comfortable in our winter weather! \nDirections will be provided in RSVP confirmation email. \n \n\nTop: A volunteer plants native plants along the Dungeness River. SUMMARY:Volunteer Opportunity: Youth Restoration Field Trips
DESCRIPTION:It is that season again and we are gearing up to get our middle school students out in the field to start executing their restoration planting projects they spent all this winter designing. We have several field trips coming up in Clallam and Jefferson Counties this spring and are in need of volunteers to help guide students as part of the Real Learning Real Work program. \nWhat to expect as an education volunteer: \nThere are several roles for you to help with! Please communicate with me if you are not comfortable in one of the roles. \n\nSetting-up & cleaning up: this involves transporting equipment to different areas of the site such as tape measure\, bins of work gloves\, tables\, and rain gear.\nFloating Guide: float between groups of 4-6 students and help guide them to carry out their assigned tasks\, answer questions\, and help with task such as planting\, using tools\, identifying invasives\, etc.\nEquipment/Gear/Plants: check out tools and equipment to students\, help them find work gloves that fit\, ensure they return tools/gloves in a clean(ish) and organized fashion. Distribute plants to groups.\n\nI will send out an updated schedule and any additional information you might need the week before the field trip. We will meet 30-45 minutes before the students arrive to answer questions\, go over the schedule\, and make sure you feel prepared. \nDates & Locations: \nSequim is our largest school we work with and they split their trip into 2 days\, ½ the 7th grade class on each day. This is our greatest need for volunteers – the more volunteers we have\, the smaller we can keep student groups. Students get way more out of the experience if they are able to work with small groups. \nMarch 24th – Salmon Creek\, Blue Heron MS \nMarch 26th – Dungeness River\, Sequim MS \nMarch 27th – Dungeness River\, Sequim MS \nMay 14th – Salmon Creek\, Blue Heron MS \nPlease sign up HERE.    \nFeel free to reach out to lmccord@nosc.org if you have any questions! \nImage courtesy of Charles Espey.

SUMMARY:Bioblitz
DESCRIPTION:What is a Bioblitz?\nA Bioblitz is a citizen science biological inventory where a group of people work to locate and identify as many species (plants\, animals\, fungi\, etc.) as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. It differs from traditional scientific inquiry\, which is usually limited to trained professionals\, in that it brings together volunteer scientists\, families\, and other members of the general public. Community members get the opportunity to work alongside scientists to learn about the biological diversity of local natural spaces while gaining skills and knowledge to develop a stronger connection to these spaces. Species identifications will be recorded using the iNaturalist App or via a paper recording form. The iNaturalist app can be downloaded on a smartphone for free and will help compile the cumulative data in real time. Learn more about the app at A Community for Naturalists · iNaturalist. \nAbout the event\nThis Bioblitz will take place on Saturday\, April 25th from 10:00-3:00 at the North Olympic Wildlife Area—Discovery Bay Unit\, located 14 miles southeast of Port Townsend at the head of Discovery Bay. This area has been the site of extensive restoration work to restore habitat for endangered Hood Canal Summer Chum\, coho\, and steelhead. This restoration work includes riparian\, stream\, wetland\, and nearshore areas that provide habitat for a wide range of plants and animals. Long term monitoring of the entire ecosystem gives us and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (the landowner) important information about the recovery of these ecosystems and the far-reaching impacts of restoration work. \nWhat to expect\nParticipants can expect to walk a mile or two throughout the course of the day’s activities\, but topography at the site is flat with only occasional small obstacles such as downed trees to maneuver around. Please bring warm clothes\, raingear (just in case!)\, footwear for wet/muddy conditions\, and a sack lunch. Weather in late April can be hit or miss\, we could have beautiful blue skies or precipitation\, so be prepared for either!

SUMMARY:Macroinvertebrate Monitoring Class
DESCRIPTION:Join NOSC to monitor macroinvertebrates at Chimacum Creek!\nMacroinvertebrate. It’s a term that is familiar to some\, but unfamiliar to many. Macroinvertebrates are small organisms that lack a backbone\, are visible to the naked eye\, and are large enough to be easily collected. Aquatic macroinvertebrates include insects\, crustaceans\, bivalves\, gastropods\, and annelids. The particular assemblage of aquatic macroinvertebrates in a given waterway can be an excellent indicator of ecosystem health. This is because different species have varying levels of tolerance to pollution and disturbance. Some\, like stoneflies and mayflies are highly sensitive to changes in water quality\, while organisms like crayfish\, leeches\, black flies and midges are much less sensitive. Macroinvertebrate sampling is a fun and relatively simple way to assess stream health and NOSC has been facilitating sampling activities in local streams and rivers for several years. Come join us on Thursday\, May 21st from 10 am – 1 pm at HJ Carroll Park in Chimacum as we analyze the creek’s health through macroinvertebrate sampling. This is an activity that is appropriate for all ages\, so feel free to bring the family along! \nEvent Details:\nThursday\, May 21st \n10 am – 1 pm \nPlease arrive by 10 am for site orientation and training. Bring snacks\, water\, layers appropriate for our spring weather. If you’d like to participate in the collection of macroinvertebrates from the creek\, please bring waterproof boots. NOSC will have a limited supply of hip waders available on a first come first served basis. \n \nTop: photo of a mayfly nymph courtesy Tom Murray.
