SUMMARY:Barerooting Plants for Orca Recovery Day
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer to help NOSC bareroot plants to prepare them for our Orca Recovery Day planting on the 17th! \nWe will be working at the NOSC Nursery at Finnriver Farm & Cidery to remove native trees and shrubs from their storage pots. Now moving into dormancy for the winter\, these plants can be transported for planting by removing the potting soil from their roots. This allows us to prepare and transport large quantities of plants more efficiently. \nWe will meet at 2PM at the NOSC Garage and walk out to the nursery. Please RSVP for driving directions. \n \n

SUMMARY:Orca Recovery Day - Volunteer Planting
DESCRIPTION:Come join us again in celebrating Orca Recovery Day as the Jefferson County Conservation District and the North Olympic Salmon Coalition team up for a planting event at Snow Creek Estuary Preserve! This is important habitat for Endangered Hood Canal summer chum salmon. Recent studies have shown that when Chinook salmon\, the preferred prey of Southern Resident Orcas\, is in short supply\, they’ll supplement their diet with other species\, including chum salmon. \nParking is limited. We highly encourage carpooling! \nPlease bring the following: Gloves\, water bottle\, snacks\, layers for fall weather\, and sturdy work shoes! \nSaturday\, October 17th\, 10am – 1pm \n31 Fairmount Rd\, Port Townsend\, WA 98368 \n

SUMMARY:Wine Bottle Labeling Party at Olympic Cellars
DESCRIPTION:In the wine world\, unlabeled bottles are called shiners. Olympic Cellars Winery is closing its doors after 47 years\, and the owners told us they wanted their last shiners to do some environmental good. They have a pallet of them\, almost 650 bottles. After conversations with the winery owners and the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s 7 Cedars a plan was hatched. The wine would be sold under a special salmon-themed label. 7 Cedars will purchase the entire run to sell at their Longhouse store in Blyn\, and the proceeds will be donated to NOSC to support salmon habitat restoration and education. \nThe design for the labels is almost done. The bottles are ready. The only thing missing is labeling the bottles\, and that’s where YOU come in. \nOn Thursday\, October 22nd at 9am we’re gathering a group of volunteers to apply labels to every bottle. With 15 people we can knock these out in just a few hours. The more volunteers that participate\, the quicker the bottles get labeled. If you’ve been eager to volunteer but going out in the field is an issue these days this activity is for you. It’s simple\, satisfying work\, done side-by-side with fellow salmon supporters\, and it’s for a great cause. Bring some friends\, and let’s make it a party! We’ll have music\, (non-alcoholic) beverages\, and something to snack on at mid-day. RSVP below. \n\nFill out my LGL Form!

SUMMARY:Member Tour: Snow Creek/Uncas Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join NOSC for our third Member Tour of 2026!\nMember Tours give Salmon Coalition Members the opportunity to see the impact of the work they support with tours of complete\, in-progress\, or upcoming projects with staff members. \nWhat does it take to turn an eroding creek into better habitat for salmon? Join us at Snow Creek Uncas Preserve to see restoration up close and learn how a healthier creek supports fish\, forests\, and wildlife. \nIn 2023\, NOSC worked with partners to restore a half-mile stretch of Snow Creek on land protected by Jefferson Land Trust. The project added log jams and side channels to slow the water\, reduce erosion\, and give salmon more places to rest and grow. Planting native trees and shrubs is another key part of caring for the creek’s future. Our Riparian Specialist Nate will guide you in this tour\, sharing the story behind the work and the role streamside plants play in a healthy watershed. Along the way\, you’ll have time to ask questions\, connect with fellow members\, and explore a place your support helps NOSC care for. Whether you’re new to salmon restoration or curious about what happens after construction\, we invite you to join us. \nSpace is limited and RSVP is required. Sign up yourself and guests below. \nWhat to expect: The Uncas Preserve is mostly flat terrain with typical forest hazards such as hidden roots and other obsticles. Bring sturdy walking shoes\, a water bottle\, and your curiosity. \nDriving directions are provided in registration confirmation. \n  \nFill out my LGL Form!

SUMMARY:Volunteer Stewardship: Make a Difference Day
DESCRIPTION:Join NOSC to steward a restoration site along Discovery Bay! The Maynard restoration project was completed over ten years ago\, after removing 150 creosote pilings from an abandoned railway and restoring 1\,700 feet to natural shoreline. The result is habitat for hard shell clams and forage fish\, an important food fish for salmon\, among many other species. We will continue the work to provide healthy habitat by picking up trash and removing invasives at the Maynard site in celebration of Make a Difference Day. \n  \nEvent Details: \nSaturday\, October 24th \n10am – 2pm \nPlease arrive by 10am for site orientation. We’ll take a break for lunch around noon. A site tour will take place around 1:30. \nTools and gloves will be provided. Please wear layers appropriate for the weather and bring water and a lunch. Footing at the site is uneven. Activity ranges from mild to moderate and can be adapted to ability level.  \nDirections will be provided in RSVP confirmation email.

SUMMARY:Coho Spawner Survey Training
DESCRIPTION:Coho season is nearly upon us on Chimacum Creek and nearby watersheds. As such\, the Salmon Coalition will be hosting its annual coho survey training at the Finnriver Farm and Cidery Haybarn on Friday\, November 13th from 10am to 12 pm. \nWe’re looking for enthusiastic\, able-bodied volunteers to walk the creek and its tributaries in search of coho and the nests\, or redds\, they create in which to lay their eggs. Volunteers can expect to encounter uneven terrain and occasional obstacles such as fallen trees to maneuver around as well as occasional inclement weather. Training is mandatory\, as volunteers need a good understanding of how to mark redds and document sightings of spawning fish. Space is limited to 20 participants. Click below to register! \nWhat to expect as a spawner survey volunteer: All needed equipment is provided. Conducting a spawner survey requires volunteers to walk over uneven and slippery terrain\, through water and brushy slopes\, and over and around logs. You will work in teams each week from mid-November through early-January on a reach of Chimacum Creek to collect important data on the coho run. \nQuestions? Reach out to Nate Roberts at nroberts@nosc.org \nPhoto by Kevin Merrigan.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Planting: Lower Salmon Creek
DESCRIPTION:Team up with NOSC to continue the revegetation of Salmon Creek by planting native trees and shrubs on November 14th! As part of ongoing environmental recovery efforts by NOSC and partner organizations\, we will be continuing riparian restoration of lower Salmon Creek that began over 20 years ago by planting native trees and shrubs where vegetation is currently lacking. Mature vegetation was removed several decades ago when the land was converted for agriculture. Restoration of the stream and its adjacent riparian wetlands began way back in 2003 following acquisition of the property by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Progress since then has been amazing to see\, but there’s still more work to be done. Join us on Saturday\, November 14th as we carry on this native revegetation work to support a healthy recovery for Salmon Creek\, its salmon\, and the numerous other critters that reside in and around the stream! \n  \nPlanting Details: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, November 14th \n10am – 2pm \nPlease bring lunch\, water\, and layers/shoes you need to be comfortable as we approach winter! \nDirections will be provided in RSVP confirmation email.

SUMMARY:12/12/26 - WDFW Andrews Volunteer Planting
DESCRIPTION:Our local Washington Conservation Corps crew has worked hard to clear invasive species from this site along Snow Creek. Now we need extra hands to plant natives in their place! \nAbout the site: \nOnce historically connected to Salmon Creek\, Snow Creek was disconnected and straightened for agricultural purposes. Now\, as part of an ongoing rehabilitation effort for salmon in Snow Creek\, NOSC and several other local conservation groups are working to restore the riparian area surrounding Snow Creek so mature conifer trees can shade its flow again in the future. \nThe property we will be working on is permanently protected by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. \nPlanting Details: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, December 12th \n10am – 2pm \nPlease bring lunch\, water\, and layers/shoes you need to be comfortable as we approach winter! \nDirections will be provided in RSVP confirmation email.
