SUMMARY:Volunteer Opportunity: Youth Education Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:It is that season again and we are gearing up to get our middle school students out in the field to start off their restoration design project. We have several field trips coming up in Clallam and Jefferson Counties this fall and are in need of volunteers to help guide students of their first field trip of the Real Learning Real Work program. This field trip they will be performing site assessments to identify habitat quality concerns for salmon and collecting data on their restoration plots. \n  \nWhat to expect as an education volunteer: \nThere are several roles for you to help with! Please communicate with me if you are not comfortable in one of the roles. \n\nSetting-up & cleaning up: this involves transporting equipment to different areas of the site such as tape measure\, bins of work gloves\, tables\, and rain gear.\nActivity Co-leader: With another volunteer educator or staff member\, facilitate an activity for a group of 12-18 students. You will be provided with a facilitator guide that will serve as a quick-reference step-by-step to walk the students through the activity in their journal. Each group of students will have an adult chaperone or teacher from the school with them who will handle all behavior management.\nFloating Guide: float between groups of 4-6 students and help guide them to carry out their assigned tasks\, answer questions\, and help with task such as measuring\, using a compass\, identifying common plants\, etc.\nEquipment/Gear: check out tools and equipment to students\, help them find work gloves that fit\, ensure they return tools/gloves in a clean(ish) and organized fashion.\n\nI will send out an updated schedule and any facilitator guides you might need the week before the field trip. We will meet 30-45 minutes before the students arrive to answer questions\, go over the schedule\, and make sure you feel prepared. \n  \nDates & Locations: \nSequim is our largest school we work with and they split their trip into 2 days\, ½ the 7th grade class on each day. This is our greatest need for volunteers – the more volunteers we have\, the smaller we can keep student groups. Students get way more out of the experience if they are able to work with small groups. \nOctober 8th – Blue Heron at Salmon Creek Wildlife Area \nOctober 10th – Chimacum 7th & 8th at Salmon Creek Wildlife Area (FULL) \nOctober 16th – OCEAN 6th/7th/8th at Salmon Creek Wildlife Area (FULL) \nOctober 17th – Sequim 7th at Dungeness River \nOctober 18th – Sequim 7th at Dungeness River \nPlease sign up HERE.    \nFeel free to reach out to lmccord@nosc.org if you have any questions! \nImage courtesy of Charles Espey.

SUMMARY:Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for the Salmon Coalition Annual Meeting October 15th! \nWe’re excited to share with you the work we’ve done over the past year\, both in education and restoration projects. We have a great keynote speaker lined up to share about the connection our work has to another unique part of our Pacific Northwest ecosystem – the Pacific Lamprey! \nWe invite you to bring a pie to share with the community to celebrate in true Salmon Coalition fashion! Savory pies are especially appreciated. \nWhen:  \nTuesday\, October 15th \nDoors open at 5pm. The meeting will begin at 5:30pm. \nWhere: \nDungeness River Nature Center \n1943 W Hendrickson Rd\, Sequim\, WA 98382 \n \nA lamprey captured as part of the fish relocation process ahead of the stream restoration project at the Snow Creek Uncas Preserve in the summer of 2023. These unique fish\, inhabit some of the same habitat as salmon and benefit from restoration work. Photo by NOSC. \nAnnouncing our Keynote Speaker: \nMonica Blanchard\, Fish/Lamprey Biologist \nMonica Blanchard works for Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and US Fish and Wildlife\, focusing on conservation and monitoring of native lampreys for both agencies. In this position\, she works on raising awareness about lampreys and collaborates with biologist and managers to incorporate lamprey into projects around the state. Additionally\, she leads and participates in research projects in WA and OR to advance our understanding of lamprey and their habitat use. Prior to this position she worked on salmon and steelhead restoration projects and ESA monitoring in Alaska\, Washington\, and Oregon. One of her favorite things about these fish\, both west coast lampreys and salmonids\, is the great variety of ecosystems they inhabit. \nMonica will speak about the life histories and ecological importance of lamprey as well as the connection between salmon restoration work and these unique fish!

SUMMARY:Member Tour: Nearshore Restoration in Discovery Bay
DESCRIPTION:Join NOSC for a Member Tour of nearshore restoration work in Discovery Bay!\nMember tours give Salmon Coalition Members the opportunity to see the impact of the work they support with tours of complete\, in-progress\, or upcoming projects with staff members. Find out more\, join\, or re-join today by visiting Become a Member | North Olympic Salmon Coalition (nosc.org). \nAbout the Tour:\nVisit the Maynard Nearshore Restoration site\, 10-years after restoration work removed 150 creosote pilings from an abandoned railway and restored 1\,700 feet to natural shoreline. Learn about the importance of nearshore restoration\, how salmon utilize this key habitat\, and get a sneak peek at our upcoming restoration work in Discovery Bay! \nSaturday\, September 21st \n \nLocation: Discovery Bay (Directions and parking information provided with registration) \nTour starts at 10:30am. Bring your own picnic and stay for lunch afterwards! We’ll have treats to share. \nBring what you need to be comfortable outside. Most of the site is in full sun. Bring a picnic and a stay for lunch on the beach! \nAbout the Project:\nThe Maynard Nearshore Restoration Project removed a 1\,700 ft. portion of the abandoned Chicago-Milwaukee railroad grade in Discovery Bay (last used in 1984)\, including creosoted pilings\, 1\,200 lineal ft. of bulkhead and a defunct tide gate. Revegetation was completed by volunteers and the Washington Conservation Corps Crew. The result is habitat for hard shell clams and forage fish\, an important food fish for salmon\, among many other species. The bulkhead removal restored a shallow water migration corridor for juvenile summer chum as they migrate out to sea\, a much safer passage than what the concrete and bulkheads provided. \nCan I still come if I’m not a Salmon Coalition Member?\nYes! We always welcome volunteers to share in member tours as thanks for contributing your time and energy to the Salmon Coalition. If you are new to NOSC and want to learn more about our projects before you volunteer or donate\, please reach out to lmccord@nosc.org. Priority is given to members and volunteers\, but if there is still space available\, we welcome anyone to join!

SUMMARY:Spawner Survey Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year! The Salmon Coalition is preparing for its annual Summer Chum surveys on lower Chimacum Creek and is seeking volunteers to collect data. \nThis year’s training will be held on Friday\, August 30th from 10am to 12pm at the Haybarn at Finnriver Farm and Cidery. (124 Center Rd\, Chimacum\, WA 98325) \nThis tends to be one of our most popular volunteer activities\, so register soon by clicking the button below. There is a cap on the number of volunteers that can participate. \nWhat to expect as a spawner survey volunteer: All needed equipment is provided. Conducting a spawner survey requires volunteers to walk over uneven and slippery terrain\, through water\, and over and around logs. Spawner surveys are conducted on Tuesday mornings from about 10am to 12:30pm from September through early November. After completing the training\, volunteers can expect to receive between 1 and 3 opportunities to conduct spawner surveys\, depending on availability\, interest\, and number of participants. \nIf you have questions or would like to find out more information\, please contact Stewardship Coordinator\, Nate Roberts\, at nroberts@nosc.org \nPhoto of volunteers Mike Marson and Joanna Labaw on lower Chimacum Creek. SUMMARY:Member Tour: Birdwatching at 3 Crabs
DESCRIPTION:Photo by John Gussman. \nJoin the Salmon Coalition’s Project Manager\, Kevin Long and Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society’s Bob Boekelheide for a restoration site tour and birdwatching in this restored estuarine habitat!\nMember tours give Salmon Coalition Members the opportunity to see the impact of the work they support with tours of complete\, in-progress\, or upcoming projects with staff members. Find out more\, join\, or re-join today by visiting Become a Member | North Olympic Salmon Coalition (nosc.org). \nAbout the Member Tour:\n \nLearn about the importance of estuarine restoration\, the complexities of restoring a delicate habitat\, and how the project has benefitted an entire ecosystem. Bob Boekelheide will lead a birdwatching tour of the site. This time of year\, we can expect to see migrating shorebirds and gulls as well as Purple Martins utilizing nest boxes. \nMonday\, July 29th at 3 Crabs. Directions in registration. \n9am – Birdwatching with Bob Boekelheide\, OPAS \n10:30am – Restoration Tour with Kevin Long\, NOSC \nPlease bring binoculars and/or a spotting scope if you have them. The trail from the parking lot is flat and short\, however there may be logs to step over. \n*Registration is REQUIRED. There is a 15-participant cap.* \nAbout the Project:\nCompleted in 2016\, the 3 Crabs Nearshore and Estuarine Restoration Project restored 84 acres of estuarine and off-channel habitat at Meadowbrook Creek\, which is part of the greater Dungeness River estuary. These quiet channels and pools now provide essential transitional habitat where juvenile salmon from the Dungeness and other rivers will forage and grow on their journey to the ocean. Learn about the importance of estuarine restoration\, the work that was completed almost a decade ago\, and how the project has benefitted an entire ecosystem. \nSince 1998 the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society (OPAS) has dedicated work and resources to a project that provides safe and species-specific nesting cavities for Purple Martins to help them nest and reproduce successfully and remain a part of our state’s vibrant array of birds. OPAS was an essential partner in the 3 Crabs Estuarine Restoration Project in helping to ensure the continued presence of Purple Martin nesting at the site. \n \nPurple Martins – 3 Crabs Estuary by Dow Lambert.
