SUMMARY:Member Tour: Birdwatching at 3 Crabs
DESCRIPTION:Photo by John Gussman. \nJoin the Salmon Coalition’s Project Manager\, Kevin Long and Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society’s Bob Boekelheide for a restoration site tour and birdwatching in this restored estuarine habitat!\nMember tours give Salmon Coalition Members the opportunity to see the impact of the work they support with tours of complete\, in-progress\, or upcoming projects with staff members. Find out more\, join\, or re-join today by visiting Become a Member | North Olympic Salmon Coalition (nosc.org). \nAbout the Member Tour:\n \nLearn about the importance of estuarine restoration\, the complexities of restoring a delicate habitat\, and how the project has benefitted an entire ecosystem. Bob Boekelheide will lead a birdwatching tour of the site. This time of year\, we can expect to see migrating shorebirds and gulls as well as Purple Martins utilizing nest boxes. \nMonday\, July 29th at 3 Crabs. Directions in registration. \n9am – Birdwatching with Bob Boekelheide\, OPAS \n10:30am – Restoration Tour with Kevin Long\, NOSC \nPlease bring binoculars and/or a spotting scope if you have them. The trail from the parking lot is flat and short\, however there may be logs to step over. \n*Registration is REQUIRED. There is a 15-participant cap.* \nAbout the Project:\nCompleted in 2016\, the 3 Crabs Nearshore and Estuarine Restoration Project restored 84 acres of estuarine and off-channel habitat at Meadowbrook Creek\, which is part of the greater Dungeness River estuary. These quiet channels and pools now provide essential transitional habitat where juvenile salmon from the Dungeness and other rivers will forage and grow on their journey to the ocean. Learn about the importance of estuarine restoration\, the work that was completed almost a decade ago\, and how the project has benefitted an entire ecosystem. \nSince 1998 the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society (OPAS) has dedicated work and resources to a project that provides safe and species-specific nesting cavities for Purple Martins to help them nest and reproduce successfully and remain a part of our state’s vibrant array of birds. OPAS was an essential partner in the 3 Crabs Estuarine Restoration Project in helping to ensure the continued presence of Purple Martin nesting at the site. \n \nPurple Martins – 3 Crabs Estuary by Dow Lambert.
