SUMMARY:Member Tour: Nearshore Restoration in Discovery Bay
DESCRIPTION:Join NOSC for a Member Tour of nearshore restoration work in Discovery Bay!\nMember tours give Salmon Coalition Members the opportunity to see the impact of the work they support with tours of complete\, in-progress\, or upcoming projects with staff members. Find out more\, join\, or re-join today by visiting Become a Member | North Olympic Salmon Coalition (nosc.org). \nAbout the Tour:\n\nVisit the Maynard Nearshore Restoration site\, 10-years after restoration work removed 150 creosote pilings from an abandoned railway and restored 1\,700 feet to natural shoreline. Learn about the importance of nearshore restoration\, how salmon utilize this key habitat\, and get a sneak peek at our upcoming restoration work in Discovery Bay! \nThursday\, August 29th \n \nLocation: Discovery Bay (Directions and parking information provided with registration) \nTour starts at 10:30am. Bring your own picnic and stay for lunch afterwards! We’ll have treats to share. \n  \nBring what you need to be comfortable outside. Most of the site is in full sun. Bring a picnic and a stay for lunch on the beach! \nAbout the Project:\nThe Maynard Nearshore Restoration Project removed a 1\,700 ft. portion of the abandoned Chicago-Milwaukee railroad grade in Discovery Bay (last used in 1984)\, including creosoted pilings\, 1\,200 lineal ft. of bulkhead and a defunct tide gate. Revegetation was completed by volunteers and the Washington Conservation Corps Crew. The result is habitat for hard shell clams and forage fish\, an important food fish for salmon\, among many other species. The bulkhead removal restored a shallow water migration corridor for juvenile summer chum as they migrate out to sea\, a much safer passage than what the concrete and bulkheads provided. \nCan I still come if I’m not a Salmon Coalition Member?\nYes! We always welcome volunteers to share in member tours as thanks for contributing your time and energy to the Salmon Coalition. If you are new to NOSC and want to learn more about our projects before you volunteer or donate\, please reach out to lmccord@nosc.org. Priority is given to members and volunteers\, but if there is still space available\, we welcome anyone to join!

SUMMARY:Spawner Survey Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year! The Salmon Coalition is preparing for its annual Summer Chum surveys on lower Chimacum Creek and is seeking volunteers to collect data. \nThis year’s training will be held on Friday\, August 30th from 10am to 12pm at the Haybarn at Finnriver Farm and Cidery. (124 Center Rd\, Chimacum\, WA 98325) \nThis tends to be one of our most popular volunteer activities\, so register soon by clicking the button below. There is a cap on the number of volunteers that can participate. \nWhat to expect as a spawner survey volunteer: All needed equipment is provided. Conducting a spawner survey requires volunteers to walk over uneven and slippery terrain\, through water\, and over and around logs. Spawner surveys are conducted on Tuesday mornings from about 10am to 12:30pm from September through early November. After completing the training\, volunteers can expect to receive between 1 and 3 opportunities to conduct spawner surveys\, depending on availability\, interest\, and number of participants. \nIf you have questions or would like to find out more information\, please contact Stewardship Coordinator\, Nate Roberts\, at nroberts@nosc.org \nPhoto of volunteers Mike Marson and Joanna Labaw on lower Chimacum Creek.
