SUMMARY:Salmon Stewards Summer Camp
DESCRIPTION:4 full-day camp • August 4-7\, 2026 • 9am – 3pm  \nCost: $250 for DRNC or NOSC Members\, $275 for Non-Members \nAges 9-12 \nREGISTER HERE\nThe Salmon Coalition is proud to offer this NEW summer camp in collaboration with the Dungeness River Nature Center \nExplore the fascinating world of salmon and the ecosystems they depend on. In this camp\, children will engage in science and outdoor adventure! Through hands-on activities\, crafts\, and games\, they’ll discover the salmon life cycle\, what makes ecosystems thrive\, and how humans shape the environment. Campers will even get the chance to make a real difference by releasing live coho fry into the wild! \nCampers should come dressed in play clothes\, water shoes\, and/or sneakers. Be sure to pack a water bottle\, lunch\, snacks\, sunscreen\, hat\, and other layers. Everything should fit in one backpack for easy transportation. You will receive an email with more information. Please note drop-off and pick-up locations may differ each day.  \nScholarships are available for this program. Click here for the application. \n \nInterested in contributing to the scholarship fund? \nSince the Nature Center has an existing camp program\, we are running all the registrations and scholarships through them. There are two ways of sponsoring a camper. The first is if you have a specific young person in mind that you want to sponsor\, you can directly register that camper at Salmon Stewards Camp – Dungeness River Nature Center. Second\, a group or individual can make a donation to the camp’s scholarship fund that is used to fill 100% of the stated scholarship need of campers who apply for scholarships. SUMMARY:Member Tour: Pedersen Nearshore Project
DESCRIPTION:Join NOSC for our first Member Tour of 2026!\nMember Tours give Salmon Coalition Members the opportunity to see the impact of the work they support with tours of complete\, in-progress\, or upcoming projects with staff members. \nAfter 25 years of restoration work in Discovery Bay\, one of the next pieces of the puzzle is falling into place. This summer\, crews break ground at the Pedersen Project\, located on a parcel recently acquired by Jefferson Land Trust\, and you’re invited to see the work up close.  \nJoin Project Manager Kevin Long on Wednesday\, August 12 at 10am for a casual “hard hat”-style tour of the active restoration site (we likely won’t need actual hard hats). Kevin will walk you through why nearshore and estuary habitat matters so much for young salmon\, how old infrastructure like bulkheads and railroad grades disrupts this zone\, and what NOSC and our engineering partners plan to accomplish before the season ends. The Discovery Bay effort has already returned benefits well beyond salmon\, supporting shorebirds\, shellfish\, and marine mammals\, and this project builds on that momentum.  \nSpace is limited and RSVP is required. SUMMARY:Volunteer Training: Spawner Surveys
DESCRIPTION:Seeking Spawner Survey Volunteers!\nTraining – August 21st\, 10am-12pm \nWow! Summer has nearly flown by\, and the Salmon Coalition is preparing for its annual Summer Chum spawner surveys on lower Chimacum Creek. Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed Hood Canal Summer Chum salmon were lost from the Chimacum Creek watershed in the late 1980’s after the failure of the Irondale Road culvert released several tons of fine sediment\, smothering salmon spawning grounds and wiping out the already-dwindling population from the Creek. \nA grassroots reintroduction effort spearheaded by Wild Olympic Salmon and concerned community members using eggs from nearby Salmon Creek was undertaken beginning in the mid-1990’s. Reintroduction was a resounding success\, and summer chum salmon in Chimacum Creek have been self-sustaining since 2003. \nThe Salmon Coalition has been monitoring the population in Chimacum Creek since reintroduction and we’re looking for volunteers to conduct surveys and collect data on these resilient fish. Surveys entail walking a section of the creek\, tallying both live and dead fish\, and collecting scale samples from deceased fish. Collected data helps the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) assess the health of the Chimacum Creek subpopulation and is also used to inform future management decisions. \nThis year’s mandatory training will be held on Friday\, August 21st from 10am to 12pm at the Haybarn at Finnriver Farm and Cidery in Chimacum.
