A Season of Learning, A Lifetime of Gratitude
Eliana Spain – Washington Conservation Corps Education & Outreach Associate
As I conclude my time with NOSC, I find myself reflecting on the lessons I’ve learned during my time here. I picked up a range of practical skills: how to get the attention of a classroom of fourth graders, how to back up a trailer, and how to plant a tree. My biggest takeaway, however, was the power of hope. Through our volunteer plantings and education programs, I witnessed the deep care that we as individuals and a collective have for our salmon and our future, and I saw how many are willing to back that up with action.
I still remember my first volunteer planting in October. I felt overwhelmed, unsure of how I could make a difference among so many more knowledgeable and experienced than I. As we continued to hold events throughout the winter, I was touched to see so many return week after week. These were busy people, giving up their Saturdays for a greater cause. I wondered: what motivates them to keep coming back?
Everyone involved with the Salmon Coalition is caring and generous, finding their own ways to contribute to a brighter future. I discovered community through these events. Some volunteers told me they found solace in being surrounded by a group of like-minded individuals. It was an opportunity to channel energy into action and make a tangible difference. One of our volunteers told me that he really needed to “touch some dirt.” I was right there with him. For me, being a part of this community was life-affirming.
I reflected on this recently during a group icebreaker when someone asked, “If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future? Why?” The man next to me was adamant that he would not travel forward. In his eyes, the future seemed too grim. My experiences with the Salmon Coalition have given me a different perspective. After seeing the dedication of everyone involved with NOSC, I have no doubt that our future is bright. Working closely with our youth, I have heard their concerns and excitement and their genuine care for the world around them.
I want to express my gratitude for your efforts in shaping our tomorrow and the hope you have instilled in me. It has been an honor and a privilege to learn from you. I will carry this optimism with me for the rest of my life.
