Fish Trapping: Volunteers Needed!

Are you curious what a salmon habitat restoration project looks like behind the scenes? Have you wanted to participate in salmon recovery beyond just planting native plants? We may have the opportunity for you!

The Salmon Coalition recently broke ground on an exciting new project along Snow Creek near Discovery Bay, but before we begin working within the stream’s channel later this summer, we’ll first need to remove fish from the section of stream we’ll be working in. The project at Jefferson Land Trust’s Snow Creek Uncas Preserve will include floodplain reconnection, the opening of side channels, and installation of engineered log jams.

We’re looking for dedicated volunteers to assist in trapping juvenile salmonids and relocating them to areas of the creek where they won’t be impacted by project activities. This will involve daily setting and emptying of traps beginning the first week of July and continuing through mid-August. We’re looking for eager, able-bodied volunteers who can devote one to several days a week to trapping and relocation during the July-August timeframe*. Fish will need to be transported in buckets full of water over uneven terrain, so keep that in mind if you are considering participating. For safety purposes, fish relocating activities will occur 7 days a week from 4:00pm-6:30pm (after daily construction activities have ceased). We’ll provide training on trap deployment and fish relocation protocol, tools, and coordination of volunteer teams. Volunteer training will occur June 26th from 3:00pm-5:30pm.

*Ideally, we would like volunteers to be able to commit at least one day a week for the duration of the 6-8 week timeframe. However, if you have existing commitments or are unsure of your schedule, please still sign up and explain what you can commit to in the designated section on the form.
